A Poem

A Quiet Walk Down the Hall

Tonight, I walked a hallway I once knew by heart.

The rooms were still there.
The doors, the lights, the quiet hum of everything continuing on…
but so many of the people were gone.
And somehow, that felt louder than anything.

I saw the spaces where laughter used to live.
Where conversations filled the air.
Where personalities big, stubborn, funny, loving once made each day feel alive.

I thought about you.
All of you.

The ones who talked my ear off,
the ones who made me laugh,
the ones who challenged me,
and the ones who just needed someone to sit beside them.

You weren’t just residents.
You were part of my days.
Part of my purpose.
Part of my heart.

I didn’t get to say goodbye to all of you.
Life moved forward, and time kept going…
and I wasn’t there to see the end of every story.
And tonight, that hurt.

But what I did get…
was time with you while you were here.
Moments that mattered.
Connections that were real.
Care that wasn’t just a job but something deeper.

And maybe that’s what this feeling is.
Not just sadness.
But love… still echoing.

Because even though those rooms have changed,
and those halls hold different names now…
You didn’t disappear.

You live in the way I remember you.
In the way I still smile when I think of you.
In the way I carry what you taught me into every space I walk into now.

Tonight, I cried.
Not because you’re gone…
But because you mattered.
And you still do.
